Description

Hind explores the school garden and categorizes six sounds by pitch: three عالي (high) sounds and three واطي (low) sounds. Each spread presents a sound source (crow, bee, palm fronds, fountain, gecko, wind) with the question ‘Is it عالي or واطي?’ Children predict before the reveal. The structure introduces the metalinguistic concept that sounds have qualities, not just identities.

Narrative Arc

Hind’s movement through the garden is purposeful but unhurried. She pauses at each sound, listens, classifies, moves on. The arc is accumulative: by the end, she’s collected a full set of pitch pairs. Low jeopardy (will she find both kinds?) resolved through exploration.

Cultural Theme

The school garden as a specifically Gulf environment: date palms, fountain (not sprinkler), gecko (native species), crow (house crow, common in UAE). Outdoor learning as culturally normative in international school settings.
